The Australiana Society is an incorporated association of collectors, dealers, auctioneers and researchers devoted to collecting, studying and preserving Australiana: art, decorative arts, antiques, historic items, collectables, buildings and sites, and portable heritage made in, or relating to, Australia.

Australiana, our 40-page quarterly colour magazine, presents authoritative  and practical articles on art, design, furniture, ceramics, glass, jewellery, metalwork, coins, notes, medals, crafts, ephemera, architecture, history, historic houses, conservation, etc. The magazine is available only by subscription.

Macquarie chest
The Mitchell Library in Sydney is displaying until 26 February the Macquarie collector's chest, created for Governor Macquarie c. 1818, and recently donated to the Library by a well-known collector.

GOWAN'S NOVEMBER SALE IN HOBART


Hobart auctioneer Gowan's sold a stylish Regency double-ended sofa in original condition for $310,800 including premium on 19 November 2005. It was allegedly found in a shed, and looks like it. The successful buyer was Hobart dealer Nevin Hurst of Masterpiece Fine Art, bidding on behalf of the Hobart Casino which will donate the sofa to the cash-strapped Tasmanian Museum.

PHAR LAP
Graham Budd Auctions in London sold some Phar Lap memorabilia on 16 November, including the bloodstock catalogue listing the sale of the colt at Trentham Racecourse (NZ) to H. Telford for 160 pounds in January 1928.

BURKE & WILLS RELIC MAKES MOUTHS WATER
Sotheby's sold a leather water bottle from the tragic Burke and Wills expedition of 1860-61 for $284,750 on 29 November 2005. It was bought by the National Museum of Australia, which aims to put it on display as soon as possible.

Julius Hogarth (1820-1879), Gold statuette of an Aboriginal man throwing a boomerang

Danish-born silversmith Julius Hogarth arrived in Sydney in 1852 to seek gold. He showed this beautifully detailed gold statuette in Sydney in November 1854, and at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1855.
